I miscarried! What do I need for recovery?

I miscarried title

Your body is AMAZING and knows exactly what to do during a Miscarriage Recovery. (No doctor intervention)

Even though your body may know what to do, Do you know what to expect during a Natural Miscarriage Recovery?

After having 3 natural miscarriages, no doctor intervention, these items were essential during each of my recoveries. I pray they help you and I am truly sorry for your loss.

Hygiene items during natural miscarriage recovery?

I am not a doctor. The information given is purely meant to inform not treat. Please consult your doctor for your personal medical care.

Pads:

With natural miscarriage expect a good amount of blood flow.

Purchase pads that are long and absorbent.

Personally, I use the long size and moderate absorbency pads. The key is to plan on changing your pads frequently.

*Pads for sleeping can be tricky, since your flow is just so heavy those first few days. Try more absorbent pads and sleeping on a towel in case you leak out.

Panty Liners:

Panty liners are helpful as your blood flow starts to decrease after the first few days.

Plan on using the long or extra-long liners, and changing frequently.

Trash Bags:

Change your bathroom garbage bags often to reduce the smell and visually depressing bloody mess. Especially if you share a bathroom.

Tip: Use grocery bags.

Body Wipes:

Depending on the level of mess you might want to just shower, but having body wipes handy can be a quicker alternative.

Basket:

Put supplies in one basket that you can move easily. You will be using this basket frequent for the next week or two. (Not necessary but I found helpful.)

What to wear during natural miscarriage recovery?

Pants:

Think sweatpants. Easy to pull up and down. Not tight, you will be swollen, achy, and cramping. Dark colors and thicker material are best.

Tops:

Choose comfortable tops that are relaxing to you. Keep the length mid-hip so you can easily clean yourself without your top falling in the way.

Underwear:

Think disposable. You are already miserable enough, ask yourself, is it worth scrubbing underwear clean???

First option, is to choose some underwear that is dark in color, has good coverage, and you don’t mind throwing away if needed.

Second option, is to order mesh underwear. They are made to be used then thrown away. They are very comfortable, stretchy, provide full coverage, and support the pads great.

(I prefer mesh underwear for the first week during heavy flow days.)

Medication during natural miscarriage recovery?

Painkillers:

During a natural miscarriage you are more likely to self-medicate with over the counter medicine. Make sure you have these on hand. The cramping can be very uncomfortable.

Doctor:

It’s a great idea to let your doctor know your body has begun to miscarry naturally.

Your doctor can answer any additional questions and provide extra support during this frustrating time.

Comfort during natural miscarriage?

Food/Treats:

Have food delivered or assign someone else to cook.

Then, grab one of your favorite treats. It’s a simple comfort that you have control over.

Heat:

Heat can offer a naturally soothing and relaxing feeling. Try a combination of heat items during your first week of miscarrying.

  • Heat pads
  • Long showers
  • Bubble baths (After heavy flow is done so your water stays clean.)

Entertainment:

Since you will be spending time at home indulge yourself in a favorite movie or tv series.

Journal:

Purchase a journal or have yours handy. You will be recovering from a surgery and trying to grieve your pregnancy loss! A journal will allow you to clear your thoughts by expressing them on paper. Just write!

Struggling with Heavy Grief? The Miscarriage Recovery Guidebook shares How the 7 Stages of Grief Correlate with Miscarriage, and provides ways to move forward. Journaling being an essential to recovery.

Home:

Excuse yourself from work responsibilities and social activities. Plan on taking a week minimum, to Just Heal!

Plan on having down time:

Overall I think the biggest “supply” needed for a Miscarriage recovery is one of the hardest to get……. Time. Time for your body to heal physically and time to heal emotionally.

Extra thoughts during natural miscarriage recovery.

Massage:

To help the process of naturally miscarrying, I like to gently massage my uterus. Just like the nurses do after having a baby. (Again, I am not a doctor so check with yours first.)

Other Kids:

Most importantly, if you have other kids that need babysat, plan childcare for then during your heavy flow days.

Another option is to give them unlimited movie time while you are taking care or your personal needs. (I have needed to do that before.)

When to share?:

Undoubtedly, share when you are ready!

Start with a small few if talking about it feels to painful. Then branch out when you are ready.

As you choose to share with close family or friend they may bring you dinner or help in some other way.

Final thoughts

Experiencing a natural miscarriage is one of those moments in life that is hard to put into words.

As you begin the process of natural miscarriage I pray that your recovery will be quick and your heart will soon find the peace it seeks.

Finally remember: Your body is amazing and knows what to do. Just rest and take care of yourself…
