A Note from the Author

Car traveling – 2,000 mile trip – 2 Adults, 6 Kids, & 1 dog

Traveling with kids isn’t something I learned from a book—it’s something I’ve lived.

Over the last 14 years, my family has racked up over 50,000 highway miles and our fair share of flight miles.

Starting, 14 years ago, with my first pregnancy, to now, a car full of 6 kids, plus the dog!

I’m really excited to write the Traveling With Kids Series and help parents feel more confident and less overwhelmed when traveling with you kids

Best of luck on your trip!

Why Traveling With Kids Is Worth It?

Traveling with kids isn’t about perfect itineraries or quiet moments—it’s about shared experiences.

Even the messy moments often become the stories you laugh about later.

With that in mind let’s dive into everything a parent needs to know before they travel with kids.

1. Start With the Right Mindset

Traveling with kids is different than traveling without them—and that’s okay.

  • Expect things to move slower
  • Plan for breaks and downtime
  • Focus on connection, not perfection

2. Prepare Kids Before You Leave

Preparation doesn’t start on the road or in the airport—it starts at home.

  • Let kids help pack their own items (and answer all their “why” questions)
  • Use countdowns to trip departure
  • Create a visual schedule of daily trip activities (Bring It)
  • Talk through what travel days will look like
  • Airplane travel, practice the flight seats and rules

3. Pack Smart

Packing for yourself is one thing, but packing for the needs of yourself + others is a lot!

You have to think through every scenario and prepare accordingly. Then do it again if you have more than 1 kid! (You’re amazing!)

Start by thinking through your immediate travel needs, then per stops, and destination.

Here are a few packing smart tips:

  • Create a packing list for each person
  • For young kids, pack a small essentials bag
  • Pack a small food bag that is easy to access
  • Reverse pack the car (Not needed for travel vs. needed)
  • Keep comfort items accessible
  • Use disposable bags for everything

Smart packing doesn’t eliminate challenges—but it gives you confidence and flexibility when things don’t go as planned.

4. Travel Bags for Success

5. Choose the Right Travel Strategy

When traveling with kids you will choose different forms of transportation depending on many variable.

  • Distance to destination
  • Time traveling vs. the destination stay
  • Travel time of day
  • Age of children and their needs (Potty training, Breast feeding)
  • Number of adults to help
  • Your travel bandwidth
  • Cost of traveling

After reviewing all the above variables now you are equipped to choose which form of transportation will fill your families greatest need.
