Should I have a D&C?
The answer is yes, and no.
Consequently, like every pregnancy, every miscarriage is unique. You, your situation in life, age, family, etc. Only make your decision based on your current situation.
That being said a D&C is such a wonderful advancement in medical technology and truly can be a blessing during such an emotionally difficult time.
At this point in my life I have had 2 D&C’s and would love to share with you my thoughts.
I am not a doctor. The information given is purely meant to inform not treat. Please consult your doctor for your personal medical care.
What is a D&C?
A D&C, or dilation and curettage, is “a medical procedure in which the uterine cervix is dilated and a curette is inserted into the uterus to scrape away the endometrium“. *Merrian-Webster.com
To clarify a D&C is a same-day surgery. While you are under anesthesia the doctor will dilate the cervix and clean out the uterus. Recovery will be at home.
Pros of having a D&C
Control over timeline:
In truth this was the main decision factor that won me over! The emotionally rollercoaster had taken its toll and I craved a sense of control.
Basically, you can schedule the surgery at your convenance. Then plan and prepare for your pre and post surgery needs.

Less bleeding:
During the D&C procedure the doctor will clean out the uterus leaning to minimal post recovery bleeding.
Prescription for stronger meds:
You will be prescribe stronger painkillers to aid recovery. This can be a benefit if you tend to have intense cramping or post surgery pains. (Pain will vary per person and recovery.)

Cons of having a D&C
More expensive:
Surely a consideration when choosing medical intervention. To avoid surprise bills call your insurance company before surgery.
Reaction to anesthesia:
Generally, anesthesia is considered safe but does come with other side effects. After personally experiencing intense nausea as a side effect the doctor prescribed a nausea patch.
Surgical recovery:
The first few days you will feel pretty sleepy and beat up. Your body just experienced a trauma and will need additional rest.

Lack of emotion:
Due to the medical staffs long list of protocols to follow, it is easy to feel a lack of sympathy for your current emotional situation. Please remember they do not mean to make light of the situation they are just doing their job.

Empathetically, I share my stories, thoughts, advice, and friendship during this almost unbearable time.
All things considered I would recommend a D&C to any woman considering it.
