Guidance for deciding between doctor office and home care during Miscarriage

woman thinking what's next

Something just feels off? Could I be having a miscarriage?

At any rate a good rule of thumb is to call your doctor!

What to expect when you call the doctors office during a miscarriage.

At this point the doctor will gathering all relevant information and you will be presented with a few different directions to choose from.

  • Stay home and take care of your own recovery
  • Go to the doctor’s office (Especially if this is your first)
  • Head to the ER

Certainly not an easy choice but all choices accomplish the same result. Choose what fits best for your current situation.

I personally stayed home for 2 and went into the office for 3 miscarriages.

I am not a doctor. The information given is purely meant to inform not treat. Please consult your doctor for your personal medical care.

What to expect when you visit the doctor’s office during a miscarriage.

Every doctors office policies are different.

In general you will have an ultrasound.

During this time they will rule out other possibilities, such as molar or ectopic pregnancies, before confirming.

Next, your doctor will discuss your results and provide you with different options to proceed.

  • Option 1: Decline medical assistance
  • Option 2: Take medication to move things along
  • Option 3: Schedule a D&C

Untimely the decision is up to you.

What to expect from home recovery during a miscarriage?

With the consent from your doctor, or your own best judgement, it is now time to prepare your home care.

First

Albeit mentally hard, you will need to switch gears and start thing about self care.

Start by gathering the basic hygiene items, especially pads and panty liners.

Third

As was mentioned earlier your doctor should let you know what is considered normal signs and symptoms for recovery. Call them back and ask specifically if not.

Personal advice: I was counseled to look for bright red to dark red blood, heavy flow to spotting, strong cramps to mild, and to call with questions.

Lastly,

and most importantly,

For your sanity you will want to write everything down! Trying to remember all the little details when you are emotionally struggling is just not fair to you.

With this in mind grab a journal, or the Miscarriage Recovery Guidebook, to document your blood flow frequency and color change, cramp severity, medication use, and more.
